Pupil Premium

What is Pupil Premium?

Pupil premium is a sum of additional money allocated each year to schools by the government. This funding is for schools to use to improve the progress and attainment of children who are considered vulnerable to underachievement, and to close the gap between them and their peers.

Schools receive pupil premium funding for children who fall into one or more of these categories:
  • Children who are eligible for free school meals, or have been eligible in the past 6 years (ever 6)
  • Children who have been adopted from care or have left care
  • Children who are looked after by the local authority

In addition, schools receive Service pupil premium (SPPfor every child with a parent who:

  • is serving in HM Forces
  • has retired on a pension from the Ministry of Defence
This funding is not based on disadvantage, but is combined into pupil premium payments to schools.

How do we spend Pupil Premium at St Augustine of Canterbury Catholic Primary School?

The money we receive from Pupil Premium is spent on experiences and resources that directly impact Pupil Premium children and their engagement levels at school. Some examples of how we use the grant include, but are not limited to:

  • Teaching: Focusing on teaching quality - investing in learning and development for teachers to improve the impact of teaching and learning for all pupils.
  • Academic support: Providing extra individual or small group support including using additional teaching assistants.
  • Wider approaches: help with the cost of educational trips or visits, external professional therapy.
